When it comes to features and DJ controller compatibility, you simply can’t beat Traktor. In addition, you can see color coded waveforms to help you see as well as hear hi-hats, kicks and snares. You can set up to 8 cue points and there’s probably no better applications for doing this with a controller than Traktor. It integrates with iTunes (although still not Spotify) and will automatically beat match for you. The range of features in Traktor is huge but notably it supports up to four decks, each of which can store up to 64 samples has some excellent sync controls that track tempos, beatgrids, and musical key. In fact, so many DJ controller manufacturers now support Traktor Pro that they will display a “Traktor ready” endorsement on the packaging. The controllers are designed specifically for use with Traktor Pro which means they’re incredibly versatile but also less prone to breaking with updates to OS X as Traktor update both the software and the controllers. Native Instruments were originally in the hardware business before they made Traktor which means it also makes some of the best DJ controllers (including the S2, S4, X1, F1 and Z1) for any DJ application. Traktor Pro arguably has the best sample & remix decks, loop recorder, sound effects and BPM algorithms of any DJ application on either Mac or PC. Native Instruments Traktor Pro is easily the one of the most popular DJ applications ever released on Mac.

I asked the three men if an alternate timeline had been created, and if so, what had happened to the original events from Episode Two. The team discussed leaving some clue behind that would indicate that the G-Man had been there, and had pulled some cosmic strings to maybe change things that shouldn’t have been changed, but that idea was cut for a number of reasons. I was struck by how quickly Eli Vance was able to put together what had happened before calling on Gordon Freeman for help. It’s a hell of an ending, returning us to the final moments of the previous release in the Half-Life series, while changing so much of what we thought we knew about what would happen next. “It just it moved the ball forward in a way that everyone in the room just found interesting,” Pinkerton said. But having the G-Man bring him back and recruit Alyx as an asset? Suddenly the story was flexible again, and surprising. Eli was always going to die, we know how that story ends since we’ve played Episode Two. She was always trying to save her father from the Combine, so using that desire as a throughline meant they didn’t have to create a McGuffin halfway through the game, even if it appeared, for a time, that they would do so. The game doesn’t give Alyx a lot to want outside of that one goal. And that favor has to be pretty consequential. “The idea that once you free god, god owes you a favor. Those are the two big ones,” Pinkerton said. “We had the prequel problem, we had the ‘god in a box’ problem. ![]() This ending, with its twists and turns, solves many problems the narrative team had been struggling with through the game’s development. And that’s where the whole thing concludes. The game’s final moments, after the credits, show the return of Dog as the robot returns Gordon’s famous crowbar to his hands. We don’t know exactly how Eli knows this, but we do know he wants to do something about it, and he knows just the person to turn to in order to save his daughter, before hopefully also saving the world: Gordon Freeman. The same place Gordon Freeman disappeared to in the time between Half-Life and Half-Life 2, presumably.Įxcept, somehow, Eli Vance knows that the G-Man has changed things, and has his daughter. wherever the G-Man keeps assets in between their missions. She accepts the deal, her father is saved, and she goes away to. “How do we solve the prequel problem to not feel like this game is just like a hermetically sealed short-story in the world of Half-Life?”Īlyx now actually does have the ability to save her father, but doing so will change the course of the game’s entire story. “The problem was how do you make any ending feel like this game mattered?” Valve writer Sean Vanaman explained to Polygon. And whatever it is, the resistance needs to get its hands on it if there is to be any hope for City 17.Ĭhanging the past, or maybe, more accurately, changing the circumstances around the game’s present, allowed the team to get players reinvested in the game’s story without simply repeating things fans already knew. Something they don’t want anyone to know about. Eli is freed, and has news of some kind of super weapon that’s being held by the Combine. The stakes seem low, and it feels like we’re merely going over the same ground as previous games, narratively speaking, except this time we’re in VR.īut Alyx actually succeeds in her first goal long before the game is over, despite everything we’ve been led to believe. The game itself reminds us of this fact in its opening moments. The game begins by admitting that the mission Alyx is on - a journey to save her father Eli Vance from the Combine - is doomed to fail. So let’s talk about that ending, because it’s a doozy, and it certainly does seem to suggest a lot. “The ending certainly suggests certain directions that we’re all really excited about, so it’s not like there’s no idea, but no, there’s not a concrete, 300-page manual of where the game goes after this,” Valve writer Jay Pinkerton said in agreement. “There’s certainly no bible that lays everything out for the next three games, I would love that, if Marc had some secret book,” Valve writer ( kinda) Erik Wolpaw told Polygon, laughing. What those games will be, however, is up for some debate. Everything old is new againĪs we’ve reported before, there doesn’t seem to be much question about whether there will be more Half-Life games in the future. What might have been a game that kept the story in a holding pattern became something that changes the nature of Half-Life’s narrative as we thought we understood it.īut of course, to go any further, and to ask the game’s writers about what it all means, we’re going to have to spoil some stuff. Half-Life: Alyx ends where Half-Life 2: Episode Two ends, after having changed everything we thought we knew about where the story was going, or what will happen next. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tell SVM to do its thing, but using the new dot product - we call this a kernel function.Figure out what the dot product in that space looks like:.This means that we can sidestep the expensive calculations of the new dimensions! This is what we do instead: Here’s a trick: SVM doesn’t need the actual vectors to work its magic, it actually can get by only with the dot products between them. Doing this for every vector in the dataset can be a lot of work, so it’d be great if we could find a cheaper solution. However, it turns out that calculating this transformation can get pretty computationally expensive: there can be a lot of new dimensions, each one of them possibly involving a complicated calculation. In the above example, we found a way to classify nonlinear data by cleverly mapping our space to a higher dimension. What’s left is mapping it back to two dimensions:Īnd there we go! Our decision boundary is a circumference of radius 1, which separates both tags using SVM. That’s great! Note that since we are in three dimensions now, the hyperplane is a plane parallel to the $x$ axis at a certain $z$ (let’s say $z = 1$). Taking a slice of that space, it looks like this: This will give us a three-dimensional space. We create a new z dimension, and we rule that it be calculated a certain way that is convenient for us: $z = x² + y²$ (you’ll notice that’s the equation for a circle). Up until now, we had two dimensions: $x$ and $y$. So here’s what we’ll do: we will add a third dimension. However, the vectors are very clearly segregated, and it looks as though it should be easy to separate them. It’s pretty clear that there’s not a linear decision boundary (a single straight line that separates both tags). Sadly, usually things aren’t that simple. Now the example above was easy since clearly, the data was linearly separable - we could draw a straight line to separate red and blue. In other words: the hyperplane (remember it’s a line in this case) whose distance to the nearest element of each tag is the largest. This line is the decision boundary: anything that falls to one side of it we will classify as blue, and anything that falls to the other as red.īut, what exactly is the best hyperplane? For SVM, it’s the one that maximizes the margins from both tags. We plot our already labeled training data on a plane:Ī support vector machine takes these data points and outputs the hyperplane (which in two dimensions it’s simply a line) that best separates the tags. We want a classifier that, given a pair of (x,y) coordinates, outputs if it’s either red or blue. Let’s imagine we have two tags: red and blue, and our data has two features: x and y. The basics of Support Vector Machines and how it works are best understood with a simple example. Support Vector Machines Algorithm Linear Data What that essentially means is we will skip as much of the math as possible and develop a strong intuition of the working principle. I’ll focus on developing intuition rather than rigor. In this tutorial, we will try to gain a high-level understanding of how SVMs work and then implement them using R. However, they are mostly used in classification problems. In machine learning, support vector machines are supervised learning models with associated learning algorithms that analyze data used for classification and regression analysis. ![]() ![]() Type 'Y' and hit ENTER every time you are prompted to import the GPG key. $ sudo dnf install postgresql13 postgresql13-server Once the default module is disabled, proceed and install PostgreSQL 13 client and server as shown. ![]() For example, the concept of traditional Swedish cuisine settled quite late. But it has a quite characteristic personality. The place has been extensively built on since the google image, but you can still see the bend on the road in the fields at the end of the estate. On the whole, Swedish cuisine is just like any other: a result of both national tradition and local raw materials. As it was Sunday, we actually drove down it to the river (!!) where it joins another cycle path that runs along the river. Look for the cycle path on your left between two units (denoted by a blue circular sign with a cyclist and walker). Turn round here and go back the way you just came for about 50m. You will come to a bend in the road with fields around you. Take the first left, then keep going as far as you can, going right then left until you exit the estate. Go to the first mini roundabout (about 300m from the E55) onto the industrial estate. The bird is next to the frozen river Fyrisan, north of Uppsala, on the edge of the Libroback Industrial estate.Įxit the E55 and go north along the 272, “Borjegatan”. Disappointing, but at least the Hawk Owl was under the belt. I bumped into Swedish birder Mattias Larsson while I was there, and we searched the various clearings together, but only had a few Bullfinches and Greenfinches to show for it. Unfortunately, although the Owl was reported as recently as 12th January, it had become much less frequent once the snow arrived. This area is very popular with the locals for cross country skiing. I took Trudy back into Uppsala then went off to the forest south of the town where there had been a very showy Great Grey Owl for the last 4-5 weeks. I make no apologies for including quite a few photo’s of this stunning bird, a birding lifetime’s ambition fulfilled in real style by this showy superstar! Hope you enjoy too! Initially it looked like a Blackbird but on closer inspection it seems too big, so could well be a Jackdaw! Have a look at the photo’s and let me know what you think. At another point it clearly had a bird that it had caught. We watched the bird for the next hour or two as it went from tree to tree, at one point landing on a lamp post, another landing on the ground next to us and hopping about searching for ground-living prey. The Blue tit’s pursuer landed in the top of the tree in front of us. I assumed it to be a Sparrowhawk, which I’d seen briefly the day before in the same spot – after all, I assumed the Hawk Owl would be feeding on rodents, not chasing birds. The answer came very quickly when as we walked towards the frozen Fyrisan river, a Blue tit alarm-called as it flew from a pursuing predator. ![]() In fact the last report was Thursday, potentially two days ago. Since snow had arrived in this area in early January, the bird was being reported on artportalen much less frequently. The next morning after breakfast we were out, and I drove to the spot with quite a heavy heart. We checked in at the excellent Grand Hotell Hornan and ate at the Lingon Restaurant – a very high quality place. At least I knew where to park and walk for the morning’s retry. I found the right spot, but only a single Waxwing was compensation. On arrival at 15.20, I had about 40 minutes’ daylight to find the wooden bridge and the bird. Trudy and I stayed overnight at the Premier Inn, Stansted, on Thursday 14th January, ready for the 10.35 flight on the Friday morning.īy 14.30, we had picked up the VW Passat from a very cold Vasteras Airport (-14.5 according to the car) and were heading east to try to beat the sunset. To make this even more tempting, flights with Ryanair from Stansted were £49 return, and Hotels were available form £60 a night. Both locations were less than an hours’ drive from Vasteras Airport. What this told me was that there were two Hawk Owls showing daily in southern Sweden – one north of Vasteras, the other on an industrial estate in Uppsala. ![]() This is accompanied by gripping photos and pretty precise location information. I have missed this species in Poland, Finland and Netherlands in recent years.Īll this combined meant I started getting VERY twitchy when I discovered the excellent resource that is which gives up to date news for the whole of Sweden, not only for birds but other wildlife too.
